Let us face it.. Trade has a digital problem.. Not because technology is missing, but because it is misaligned..
Even with the best platforms, smart customs systems, and cross-border e-payment tools, many businesses still spend hours chasing paperwork, retyping the same data into different portals, and manually verifying information they should already trust.. In a world of blockchain, AI, and API connectivity, this simply should not be the case anymore..
This is where the 2025 ICC Digital Standards Initiative (DSI) steps in with a powerful new report: “Digitalising Global Trade: A Roadmap to Interoperability and Trust at Scale”..
At its heart, the report is not about more software.. It is about speaking the same language, digitally.. And creating a digital trade environment where documents and data flow freely, securely, and reliably between businesses, banks, governments, and technology systems, no matter what format they use..
So, what is this roadmap actually about..??
It is about four things.. And they are the things that businesses of all sizes struggle with today:
Too many formats, not enough consistency – There are 36 key documents in global trade, like invoices, bills of lading, certificates of origin.. They are often duplicated, retyped, or misunderstood.. The ICC DSI identifies the 189 most common data points across them and shows how to standardise and structure them for digital use..
Lack of trust in digital systems – A signed paper document is trusted.. But digital data often is not.. The roadmap introduces a simple concept: “verify once, use many times”.. That means if data is validated once (with secure IDs, digital signatures, or timestamps), it should be trusted by everyone in the supply chain.. No rechecking, no extra steps..
Disconnected systems – Today, most platforms, apps, and portals operate in isolation.. The report calls for an interoperability layer, shared technical foundations such as aligned data models, open APIs, and trusted credentials, that allow these systems to exchange verified data seamlessly, without custom integrations..
SMEs still left behind – Digital trade cannot be only for the big players.. The roadmap highlights that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) need digital tools that are simple, low-cost, and built on open standards—not locked behind proprietary systems or country-specific rules..
Why does this matter to global trade..??
Because trust, speed, and efficiency are the new currencies of commerce..
- Banks want to finance shipments in real-time, not wait days to check documents..
- Customs wants reliable data they can act on, without paper delays..
- Shippers want fewer errors, less friction, and more visibility..
- SMEs want to trade internationally without being buried in bureaucracy..
The Digitalising Global Trade: A Roadmap to Interoperability and Trust at Scale report gives everyone, regulators, technology providers, financiers, and logistics players, a clear path to work together instead of separately.. And most importantly, it shows how we can move from pilots to scale, from theory to real-world application..
